The High Bridge Historical Committee

Nestled in the heart of Hunterdon County, High Bridge, New Jersey was officially incorporated as a township on March 29, 1871, and later reincorporated as a borough on February 19, 1898. However, the community itself dates back much further—settled around 1700.

High Bridge boasts a rich tapestry of history. Originally known for its strategic location along the South Branch of the Raritan River, the town flourished as an industrial hub with the rise of ironworks in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Taylor Wharton Iron and Steel Company—one of the oldest continuously operating iron manufacturers in the United States—played a pivotal role in shaping High Bridge’s identity, bringing innovation and prosperity to the region. With its historic railway connections and distinctive architecture, the borough stands as a living testament to the industrious spirit that built America.

The High Bridge Historical Committee is dedicated to preserving and celebrating this remarkable legacy. From the iconic bridge that gave the town its name to the enduring charm of its Victorian homes, High Bridge is a place where the past is never far from view.
